BAM! BANG! CLANG!

“WOULD YOU QUIT IT ALREADY?!”

A tall man held an umbrella up above his head stopping midair with his swing into the control dash that was sparking. He turned a menacing glare on his companion who was slumped on the floor with blood streaming down his face from a head wound.

“It’s not going to open the doors if you break it anymore dumbass.” The slumped man sighed out in exasperation.

“Well what do you expect me to do? We’re stuck in this elevator with no way to call for help!” The man threw his umbrella against the far wall of the elevator before slumping against the sealed elevator doors.

The elevator shook and dropped slightly as another earthquake shook the small room making both men grapple the walls and floor in panic.

“We’re going to die! I’m going to die right next to you of all people!” The injured man laughed maniacally.

“Shut up! Stop wasting our air!” The other man growled watching as his companion started gasp for air and clench his chest as his laughing turned into fits of bloody coughing.

Both men were seriously wounded from the initial hit of the sudden shockwave. The day had started like any other. With the two men vying for the promotion the company was looking to fill. They were always in competition with each other, always trying to one up the other. Now here they were brought to be perfect equals in a life-or-death emergency, making their petty hatred of one another moot.

“Where does it hurt Henry?”

“Everywhere.” Henry grumbled nursing his ribs.

“You shouldn’t have blocked that light fixture.” He said looking over at the shambles of what was left of part of the light fixture that used to be above their heads.

“You’re right, I shouldn’t have. Not sure why I did.” Henry mumbled out starting to fall asleep.

“Hey don’t fall asleep! You probably have a concussion or something!”

“Wouldn’t it be better for you if I died?” Henry blinked at the other man, his eyes glossy and hazy.

The elevator dropped another couple of feet panicking the men again. Henry started to silently cry as he slumped further into the wall.

“Not really. I rather enjoy our working relationship. Keeps me on my toes, besides who am I going to compete with when you’re gone.” He said nervously turning to fiddle with the sparking panel.

“Very funny. You think we have a relationship, David?” Henry chuckled through coughs and wheezing.

“We’re not going to die.” David reiterated as he burned his fingertips on the live wires. “Emergency services have got have been alerted by now.”

“Elevators and parking garages are going to be on the bottom of the search and rescue list though. And we checked both of those boxes today.” Henry snorted.

“Well, aren’t you a giant ball of positivity today.” David rolled his eyes as he heard the dial tone of the emergency call button. The elevator dropped again causing the elevator to creak and groan as it held on by a thread. The panel exploded burning half of David’s face with electricity. He started screaming in pain as Henry began to pray. David curled up in a ball sobbing himself. His own skin feeling as though it was falling off.

The lights dim as both men waited. Silent. Their shared animosity for one another no longer of any importance as they waited for the inevitable. Their quiet sobs were the only sound as the last cable snapped.
